Modern Self-Defence – Lessons Learnt from Sparring Egyptian Pro Fighters
In the heart of the thriving mixed martial arts (MMA) scene, serious learning opportunities are often presented through adrenaline-fuelled sparring sessions. This is especially true when sparring against fighters who are endowed with the experience and skillsets that exceed merely the average. The video “Sparring Egyptian Pro Fighters (6x Kickboxing World Champion)” by MMAShredded offers us such an opportunity. The primary focus of the video is Jeff Chan, the creator of MMAShredded, sparring against four Egyptian professional fighters and one amateur fighter. Another important figure in the mix is a six-time kickboxing world champion in the lightweight and welterweight divisions, Isaac, who also happens to be the head coach and owner of SGF Academy. Despite his age of 47, Isaac remains rapid and robust, embodying the discipline and conditioning at the heart of martial arts. Now, let’s dive in and unwrap the valuable self-defence cues we can take from such an engaging sparring session. Firstly, the grip strength and speed of Isaac cannot be overstated. In the face of such an opponent, enacting a proper defense and countering effectively becomes an art in itself. A notable moment showcases Isaac implementing a ‘Superman Cross’, beautifully demonstrating how veteran fighters combine strength, speed, technique, and timing. Further, the video brings to light one specific move that echoes repeatedly – the knee to the body off the exit. A punch here, another knee there, Jeff weaves agility and force with exceptional precision, showcasing the importance of striking in the very instances of transition during a fight. In his sparring with Omar, an amateur fighter, we see how adaptability plays a vital role in self-defence. Omar’s unique style of blocking raises the importance of ‘aiming his elbow at my fist’, causing notable damage and reminding us all that flexibility in your defensive techniques can be just as important as your offensive ones. One of the more significant takeaways from the video is the emphasis on head movement. As Jeff highlights his head movement routine, we can appreciate how mastering such skills can be a game-changer, helping to avoid strikes and take less damage – a crucial aspect in self-defence. Moving on to the rounds with Ali, a pro MMA fighter, and Omar Yusf, another pro fighter, the video goes into the realm of managing opponents with longer reach and unusual striking styles. These rounds remind us that self-defence isn’t solely about holding your ground, but strategically adapting to your opponent’s strengths. Lastly, in his round with Noshando, a national kickboxing champion, pure striking is at play as he doesn’t do MMA. It drives home a point that even when ground game is off the table, fighters can still exchange lessons in speed, footwork, and striking. Overall, true expertise in self-defence necessitates a profound understanding of different martial arts forms, a robust physical condition, and the foresight to adapt to varying styles of opponents. This nine-minute video from MMAShredded brims with precisely these lessons, enticing us to comprehend the multi-dimensionality of self-defence in the modern context. It reminds us at every turn, the essence of martial arts – adaptability, resilience, and perpetual learning.MMA Block
