Modern Self-Defence: Adapting the Superman Punch for Real-Life Situations
Martial arts is an ever-evolving field, continually being shaped by the practitioners who strive for more effective and efficient combat techniques. One of these individuals is Jeff Chan, the mastermind behind the MMA Shredded YouTube channel, constantly delivering comprehensive and practical insights into various fighting tactics. In a posting dated July 29, 2023, he showcased his unique approach to one of the most popular and sensationalized moves in MMA, the Superman punch. Notably, the video – “15 Effective Superman Punch Combos (Real Time Sparring)” – goes beyond the mere theatrics of the Superman punch. It explores various combinations, illustrating their practicality in actual combat while giving viewers an understanding of the inner workings of mixed martial arts. At the heart of these 15 combinations is the Superman punch. This technique, which involves the fighter jumping forward in a punching motion while one leg is extended back, mimics the flying posture of the famous comic book character, hence the name. Although the move is flashy and might seem ostentatious, it is legitimately effective in both MMA competitions and self-defence scenarios, especially when used in combination with other moves. Chan’s focus on the Superman jab, instead of the conventional Superman punch, offers an innovative and less predictable way to deliver the technique. He mentions that the casual jab may not generate much power without a preparatory jump but is quick, takes the attacker by surprise, and can be a great setup for following moves. The effectiveness of the Superman jab is demonstrated in the combinations Chan goes on to discuss, starting with the technique paired with an outside low kick. He guides us through different scenarios, diversifying the kicks’ targets, including areas such as the head, torso, and legs. The process involves jumping into the Superman jab and immediately transitioning into kicks, providing the element of surprise and disrupting the opponent’s defensive stance. Other notable variations include the Superman cross, where one performs a low kick and follows with the Superman punch not by jumping but by snapping back the kick foot while throwing the cross. According to Chan, this transition is “super simple, super effective.” Adaptation and versatility stand out in Chan’s style. He does not limit his combinations to fixed patterns; instead, he adapts to his opponent’s actions and reactions. This principle is best illustrated in combination 12, where Chan follows a low kick and Superman cross with a double-step low kick – a combo he says yields the highest success rates. In conclusion, MMA Shredded’s video presents a comprehensive guide on how to incorporate the Superman punch into real combat scenarios seamlessly. It’s all about the blend of creativity and adaptation, turning the extravagant Superman punch into an actual combat application. And as Chan eloquently advises: there’s always room to break the rules and experiment, adding that a dash of flair to your fighting style.MMA Block

Excellent head kick control. You are one of very few guys who show failed attempts and that was what made me a fan.
I think #11 is my favorite
Great review! Definitely trying these in sparring! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
The best way for domain a technique is try really hard everytime of practice it. Excellent Jeff.

Goat
How to fight like Ilia Topuria please
Awesome Vid💪🔥🔥
1:51 I’m honestly so glad to see that this happens to pros too lmao. I was so embarrassed when this happened to me during padwork
Nice! The failed attempts to the first combination demonstrate that the best response to such pouncing attack is to stand your ground or maybe even advancing yourself.
my fav clips are the head kicks landing with the full view of "the gentle art" rashie 😂
Ok really nice but how do you remember all of these i really struggle with remembering your combinations when its time for sparring
Those shorts you wore in #12 (samurai and kanji) looked dope! I need to score some of those.
This guy needs to be a tekken 8 dlc, for real though the combinations I've learned from watching these videos helped me really style on people in sparring. Great stuff 💪
Your skill level in your sparring footage is somewhat disheartening because you said you don’t think you have what it takes to be a world class fighter. I’ve been training for most of my life and have been considering making a career out of MMA. My coach thinks I could do it, but I think you’re far ahead of me as a fighter, so I find your lack of confidence discouraging.
It needs a great coordination.
I liked it, I think I'm adding Superman punch for combos too 😅👍 (I ve always thought about it like an isolated technique).
I like this combo, ima have to try this in UFC 4
Hey Jeff, would you have considered using the body side kick sometime with your combos. I feel like some those clips could of been benefited more than the roundhouse to the body vs the sidekick
06:09 did he fall down ?
Damn Superman jab…mad useful
It’s time for Jeff the gym warrior Chan to pay rent with another one of his sparring fight sessions.
Showing failed attempts is so great you’re one of the only one that does great bid as always keep it going ❤
Hey Jeff I like your videos and I use Okinawan kenpo karate and other styles when I spar I also love your videos
Hello. Could you make a video with setups for uppercut?
Yessir man I use Superman – low kick basic 2 combo. Gsp move. I’ll set up a Superman combo low kick & make them think I’m gonna low kick, to a Superman – low kick.
Is there a chance you would come to the Netherlands for a seminar? I think there will be lots of people willing to improve here.
Love your content Jeff, always very informative 👍
6:06 11) damn same side combo really lands well. Just like recent UFC knockouts (Edwards-Usman, Gaethje, Piorier)
They must have studied your videos haha

All great combos! I learned the lead left hand to right low kick combo at the WAT nyc. I land it quite often.
Wow, a lot of stuff! Maybe combination 12 is the best, I trust you, when you say you use it the most it should be really effective.
You provide a reservoir of info for learning, thanks so much
