Modern Self-Defence: Insights from Sparring with a Pro Sambo Fighter

In a recent video from Jeff Chan’s MMAShredded YouTube channel, he gives us a breakdown of a friendly sparring session with a professional Russian sambo fighter known as Bulat. Both fighters have been honing their crafts for 16 years and weigh the same, making it an evenly matched bout. Throughout the video, both fighters demonstrate different strategies and tactical manoeuvres. They maintain respect for each other and keep the striking component light, focusing instead on the art of grappling which is intrinsic to sambo. One of the key tactics Bulat uses is to change his levels and shoot for the body lock. But instead of keeping the hold, he shifts into a headlock-meets-single-leg takedown, forcibly unbalancing Jeff by snapping his head down while grabbing his leg. Despite its apparent simplicity, this unorthodox takedown requires ample control and precision to perform effectively, as Bulat clearly demonstrates. The combat continues, with Jeff carefully observing and breaking down each technique. One particularly impressive move shows Bulat make use of a common Sambo technique. He begins by tying up with Jeff in an under and over position, and then steps his right leg around Jeff’s left to perform a swift suplex. In response, Jeff quickly posts on his right arm and performs a technical lift to get back onto his feet. This sequence, like many in their bout, highlights the dynamic back-and-forth nature of combat sports, where each action can be countered or turned to an advantage. Their exchange isn’t just about displaying hard-hitting ways to defeat an opponent. There’s also a focus on how to nullify an opponent’s move and regain control. For instance, Jeff showcases some impressive defensive strategies as he stops the relentless takedown attempts by adopting the over and under position. However, Bulat smoothly transitions it into a swift judo throw. Again, Jeff shows his resilience as he bounces himself back to his feet. Further into their grappling dance, Jeff swaps to the k-guard when Bulat catches him in an inverted triangle. This K-guard is an effective BJJ guard especially useful for leg locks and countering attacks by providing control and range of motion. In the final phase of the sparring, the heat dials up a notch when Jeff puts on a gi, adding more complexity to their grappling exchanges. This allows them to use lapel grips, deeply tied into judo and jiu-jitsu techniques. After a flurry of chokes, armbars, and transition attempts, they end their session in good spirit, having demonstrated the intricate beauty and rigour of martial arts. To summarise, this video is an insightful snapshot of how different combat disciplines like MMA, Sambo and JJ interplay in real-time as both combatants test their skills against each other. The knowledge shared in this breakdown not only aids in enhancing self-defence skills but also in appreciating the depth and versatility that modern martial arts bring to the table. If you’re a lover or practitioner of martial arts or simply interested in modern self-defence, this visual breakdown serves as a fantastic learning resource.

  1. Grappling should be the hardest combat sport in entire MMA 💪💪💪 by looking at this professional it's their is no dough grappling required relentless energy ,my god as well as technique

  2. From what i observed, he is nearly as good as you in every aspect of thr game. In a matter of shier technic and variety of skills used, i still give it to you.

The one aspect he stays miles above you tho, is transitions. He changes from standup to throws, from throws to hokds or locks and from locks to sweeps so effortlessly. Its quite crazy to watch.

And i think thats exactly why sambo fighters are so effective in mma. They are much faster in this transitions, then lets say a guy that trains boxing and wrestling independently. And then, once they are under pressure from a strong boxer, they can just transist into the ground game within the blink of a moment.

Of course this also sparks a psychological warfare. If you face a sambo fighter, its much harder to predict what happens next…

  3. Самбист молодец. По броскам уверенно выиграл 7:4. А по правилам САМБО вообще счёт разгромный.

  4. It seems like you have practice and trained with sambo and my question is khabib said « if you mix combat sambo and wrestling you’re almost un unbeatable» are you more or less agree with that ?
The mix or takedowns and wonderful control

  5. Great match
This is definitely satisfying way to get in your skills
    Awesome Video 🤜🏽🤜🏽🤜🏽🤛🏽🤛🏽✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽

  6. I love how you can spar without hurting each other and still learn practical martial arts at the same time. Maybe my experience is limited, but this is a rare thing for me to find in dojos

  7. I wish there were more sambo gyms maybe it’s my area but I do Muay Thai and can go into jiu jitsu in the future
But sambo is like my main goal in the future after getting everything for must Thai settled and that can take time
And finding time or making time for these things is much more difficult when you have other things happening in life
