Karate vs. Knife Attack: A Video by Jesse Enkamp

Jesse Enkamp, also known as The Karate Nerd, shared a video about defending oneself against knife attacks. This video, titled “KARATE vs. KNIFE ATTACK (2 threats)”, was uploaded on May 25th, 2020, and has garnered over 193 thousand views.

Jesse begins the video by emphasizing the importance of avoiding physical confrontation whenever possible, advising viewers to run if they can. He clarifies that if a knife attacker shows their weapon, they usually intend to intimidate, not to harm. The opposite applies if they hide their knife, an indication of their intent to use it.

Jesse demonstrates how to react when an attacker grabs you, shows their knife, and demands money or possessions. He stresses the importance of verbal deescalation while preparing to defend oneself if necessary.

He advises viewers to position their hand between the attacker’s knife hand and their throat. Simultaneously, they should slap the attacker’s face from the side, outside their field of vision. This tactic distracts the attacker, allowing the potential victim to push them down.

Once the attacker is down, Jesse instructs viewers to place a foot behind the attacker’s back for leverage and control, pinning them down further with the knee against their throat. He shows a basic method to disarm the attacker, by putting the attacker’s elbow towards oneself and twisting the wrist to loosen the grip on the knife.

Enkamp points out that the movements he demonstrates in his video are not exclusive to Karate, but can also be seen in other forms of self-defense arts like Aikido, Jujitsu, or Krav Maga. He emphasizes that these movements, drawn from traditional kata applications (bunkai), are inherent in Karate’s roots in Okinawa.

In his video, Jesse Enkamp meticulously teaches self-defense techniques against knife attacks, reminding viewers to only use these techniques under professional supervision due to their potentially dangerous nature. This video serves as an enlightening guide to self-defense techniques, rooted in traditional Karate practices.

Practical Karate Applications in MMA and Fighting Sports

Karate, a martial art with origins in Japan, has seen its practical applications evolve into various fighting sports, especially Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). The technique is not merely about powerful kicks and punches but also incorporates aspects of strategy, agility, and self-defense.

Importance in Fighting Sports

In the context of MMA and other combat sports, Karate is celebrated for its swift and potent strikes, often delivering unexpected knockouts. However, the sport’s emphasis on respect and discipline also holds an integral place. Even though many athletes come from different martial art backgrounds, the strategic application of Karate techniques often proves decisive in the ring.

The Origin of Practical Japanese Martial Arts

Practical Japanese martial arts, traditionally known as Bujutsu, originated as warfare techniques for Samurai. The arts include swordsmanship, archery, and Jujutsu. With the modernization of Japan, Bujutsu evolved into Budo, practised now for personal growth and discipline, not for combat.

  1. one thing Ive heard from every knife fighting instructor is: "You're gonna get cut." I suppose in desperation, should things turn unavoidable, these techniques are about the best you can get.

  3. Firstly love how you said when attackers show you the knife its more to scare! and that commited attackers will conseal the knife so true have had experiences with both both were terrifying. Love how you find technique in Kata I remember being bullied in school and joining GKR Karate cause I got tired of being beat up all the time and as the more I learnt even from white belt made all the difference couple of techniques help keep them away and the beating weren't as bad remember beginner the point those real experiences is what made me thinking practical use take the head level block not very practical as a block unless sparing with fellow student then i began questioning why can't that block be a strike or a crossface I mean you hit someone in the face with the blade of your forearm as I call it it's gonna hurt so I built my self defence style of karate around that Soon I got good at awareness just being aware on my surroundings whats going on around me I was able to prevent attacks all together either by walking away verbal defusion so important if all else fails Pre Emptive strike at the first threatening gesture are they trying to touch me are angling off into a stance can i see their hands are their fist clenched. What are they saying!. May I share my knife defence story I remember 8 years ago I was coming home from work 2 hour commute in order to get to the train station you had to cut through the park. These two teenagers were waiting there attacked me or rather they were going to. I think they were doing drugs as i walked by or something they didn't want me seeing. They started moving at me saying ( Lets bash him) I'm already in a passive fighting stance ready to block or strike if necessary I was about to start verbal difusing when I heard ( I'm going to gut this fat pig) Red flag I moved in and struck imediately struck with the blade of my arm between the eyes my opposite struck low the force i used pushed him over and yes I picked up that technique with Kata. His friend was far enough away that I could get away without engaging I bolted for the station. So why did that work awareness on what was going on what they were saying. I know if anyone says I'm gonna gut him. or stab him they have a knife and if even they don't do not the chance they just threatened my life. So I did what I had to in order to get home safely.

  4. I don't think the karate will win all the tine, a crazy man with a knife will stab you multiple times or not he's gonna hold the knife without turning or spinning side to side
Now i know how a karate black belt is gonna protect himself from this video I'll make sure I'll carry two knives lol

  5. Our instructor told us these defensive techniques

    1. If you can, run away, back off, keep your distance, the further away you are the least likely the blade will reach you.
    2. Use anything available for a weapon that will fend him off. A belt with a buckle is reliable
    3. If available go for higher ground, like a table or the stairs, then fend off with your legs. Again maintaining distance is key
    4. If you are somehow cornered, just give him what he is asking to end the confrontation, self-preservation should be first
    5. If you must fight, then expect you will get cut. Just try your best to minimize damage. Protect your face, and your torso where vital organs are. If you can deflect the cut somehow with your forearms, the better.

  6. One of the Best Karate instructor. I live your connection to the Oldenburg Karate and martial arts who wäre for combat and war.

  7. I had to defend myself against a thug with a knife , i moved towards the attacker , grabbed the arm keeping him from keeping on stabbing me , it wasn't easy believe me . i got a few nasty cuts but at least i survived. This happens so fast you will only have gross motor skills at your disposal . The fastest shortest move always works the best.

  8. I dont believe in unamred vs armed knife techniques. Not one system or style

Its just knives man they are just so universal and lethal , so many ways in using a knife 🔪
