Paving the Way for Modern Self-Defence: A Recap of “I Challenged ANOTHER Wing Chun Master” by MMAShredded

The evolution of self-defence training and techniques has been dramatically altered with the advancement of MMA. This fact is exceedingly visible in the thrilling session recorded on the MGAShredded YouTube channel, titled “I Challenged ANOTHER Wing Chun Master”. The video features a sparring session between MMA Shredded host, Jeff Chan, and Kevin Lee, a multi-disciplinary martial arts practitioner with proficiency in disciplines such as Savat, Muay Thai, BJJ, Wing Chun, JKD, CSW, Cy, and Kali. Savat: The Art of Kicking The first discipline, Savat (French kickboxing) was highlighted, where Lee exhibited his mastery through dynamic high to low kicks, using his boots as his primary weapon. Jeff found this style particularly tricky due to the unpredictable transitions from high to low kicks. These agile techniques could inflict serious pain if implemented with proper Savat shoes and full power. Wing Chun: A Deceptive Game Interestingly, despite Lee being a trained Wing Chun practitioner, it was Jeff who attempted to utilise Wing Chun techniques frequently throughout the sparring session; some of these were taught by Lee himself. One of the standout techniques featured was the ‘Scorpion Punch’, an unorthodox strike which Jeff playfully termed the ‘back scratcher punch.’ A Multifaceted Approach Jeff’s strategy during the spar was to challenge Lee, in each round, to stick to one discipline and follow its rule set. This put Lee at a substantial disadvantage but showcased his adaptability and fluidity across different martial arts styles. Muay Thai: The Science of Eight Limbs In round two, Jeff and Lee engaged in a Muay Thai-centric spar, where Lee started with a strong sweeper. There was also evidence of Wing Chun techniques interspersed within this round, demonstrating a harmonious blend of various martial arts forms. Jiu-Jitsu: A Test of Endurance The video concluded with a round dedicated to BJJ, where both Jeff and Lee demonstrated their ground-fighting skills. Despite Jeff’s weight advantage, Lee effectively exerted pressure and even managed to pass Jeff’s guard. This eye-opening session emphasised the importance of diversity, adaptability and constant learning in modern self-defence. Summing Up the Session What stands out in this video is the effective transition and combination of different combat techniques. Chan’s and Lee’s fluidity, technique, and adaptability are a testament to their rigorous training and dedication to MMA. One key lesson to take away from this video is that, in the world of modern self-defence, it’s not just about mastery in one form of martial arts, but rather the adaptability and fluidity to combine various forms and techniques to gain an upper hand in a real-life situation. In conclusion, this sparring session shows that modern self-defence is less about sticking rigidly to one martial art form and more about integrating various techniques to create a robust and multi-faceted defence strategy. Whether you’re a martial arts enthusiast or a novice, this video provides valuable insight into the effectiveness of a multi-disciplinary approach to self-defence.

  1. Brother if you want to see how street martial arts working , do it without gloves , protection or rules . It will giving you real experience .
But I like your content , you're really humble guy

  2. Jeff . Will you try internal kung fu ? It remains a mystery to me. I have experience with the internal trick… which is more than usage of frame and structure . I’d like to have a devoted and objective martial artist like you to shed some light on it.

  3. Kevin is such a fantastic ambassador for Martial Arts in general, as well as a fantastic model for the mindset to have for aspiring martial arts. Man is talented, technical, playful, and respectful as can be. I'm also a massive fan of yours as well Jeff, and I think this video really displayed how easily the bridge between traditional art mindsets and the more modern MMA mindsets can be connected. Absolutely lovely video Jeff

  4. i belive wing chun stuf should be done in 3 to 4 chains at most, anything more it becomes a gimmick. The way I see it, you push the hands couple of times to create opening for the punch

  5. How did I miss this one? I've literally watched it four times today. Kevin has such a tremendous set of body mechanic skills. His balance is off the charts! Those kick transitions! his core is like an oak tree! Most of all, this one reminds us that the laughs, friendships and respect are as important as the rest of it. Great job gentlemen, this one is gold.
