Examining the Efficacy of the Pepperball Lifelite in Modern Self Defence

In a recent instalment on the Hard2Hurt YouTube channel, self-defence expert Icy Mike and his associate Shane put the Pepperball Lifelite to the test. As a detailed dive into the effectivity of this device as a modern self-defence tool, the video takes on the challenging task of deciphering the realities of self-defence mechanisms in an increasingly complex world. The original Pepperball Lifelite product is a bulky apparatus, with Mike likening it to a Batman weapon due to its size. It’s a combination of a flashlight and a pepperball launcher – pepperballs being ammo that bursts on impact, releasing a pepper spray-like substance. At first sight, its size is identified as an impracticality for everyday carry, suggesting its use may be more suited towards home defence or dog-walking situations. Then, the video introduces the Lifelite Mobile. The new model addresses the size issue, offering a compact variant that retains the same functionality. But even in this more manageable form, concealing it remains a challenge. The Test with Live X Rounds Pivoting from the device’s design and first impressions, Mike and Shane focus next on its performance. They test the efficacy of an upgraded type of pepperball ammunition – the Live X rounds. Unlike standard pepperballs, which were tested by Mike and Shane in a past video and found to be more irritating than debilitating, the Live X rounds promise more potent effects. The initial testing phase involved shooting one another with the Live X rounds. Mike, an experienced martial arts and self-defence expert, noted that the rounds produced a considerable physical response, including coughing and eye watering, but did not incapacitate him. The impact left him feeling like he could still engage in a fight, meaning the rounds fell somewhat short of a full incapacitation effect. This led to a second testing method. Mike fired several rounds at a tree, creating a sort of pepperball ‘cloud’. He then walked directly into this cloud, where he described the effects as akin to mild exposure to pepper spray. This represented a second step towards validating the Live X rounds’ claim of high potency, but still fell somewhat short of fully incapacitating an individual. The Lifelite Mobile in Action Unfortunately, the notable downside during the testing was the Lifelite Mobile’s cryptocurrency reliance on a CO2-based firing system. In the video, there were numerous issues pertaining to the CO2 leaking and the device only functioning for a single shot before failing.

Final Thoughts

Overall, while intriguing as a self-defence tool, both variants of the Lifelite didn’t fully deliver on their promise. Despite being effective at irritating a potential attacker and possibly deterring less determined ones, both variants fell short in terms of fully incapacitating an assailant. According to Icy Mike, very determined attackers may still be able to fight through the effects of a pepperball hit. This could potentially limit the effectiveness of the Lifelites in high-stakes self-defence situations. Also, the reliance on CO2 canisters in the Lifelite Mobile model posed a concern over the potential lack of reliability. This highlights the importance of having dependable self-defence tools as a fundamental aspect of modern self-defence. In the mixed, unpredictable world of self defence, absolute reliability is a must. Despite all this, the video does provide interesting insights into the use of pepperballs in self-defence and illustrates the necessity of proper testing of self-defence tools. Understanding your tools’ capabilities and limitations is vital, and having first-hand experience can have practical implications in real-world situations. Remember, the goal is not just to deter attackers, but to effectively defend yourself when necessary.

  1. When I used to live in California, I concealed carried a pcp handgun prior to getting my exposed permit to carry as a armed security guard. lots of time a wadded up newspaper and a simple four inch peice of wood helped me more then lots of non lethal stuff out there for me anyway.

  2. To this day, Mike shooting his wife in the head with that pepperball still remains one of THE funniest things I've ever seen. The fact that Mike was laughing so hard he could barely stand up made it all the funnier! 🤣

  3. I skipped this video for a while because the product looked like a stupid gimmick. You confirmed that it was. I do appreciate you and your work for that. Thank you for being real about this stuff

  4. I feel like a flashlight/pepper spray would just be better.. easier.. less prone to leakage.. pepper spray definitely seems to have more effect on target than the pepper balls.. and a canister of pepper spray can get pretty small, allowing a normal sized flashlight to have just a little nozzle to spray it.

  5. Good stuff. Glad you tested the PepperBall Live-X. That's 5% PAVA and it highlights the importance of knowing the concentration. They are definitely potent. I've only tested the 2% on myself and that's enough for me.

  6. You just need to choose better performing c02 launchers. The byrna LE or SD is great. The HDR 50 or 68 is great aswell. The byrna max rounds are nasty and so are the Duke Hazard rounds. I'm currently working on my own formula. I'll send you some to test when completed. Great video man 👊👍👍

  7. Can't get it in NYC: "This item cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location. Please choose a different delivery location." 😡
