The Power of Advanced Footwork and Angles in Modern Self Defence
In Icy Mike’s video on modern self defence, he shares valuable insights about the techniques of advanced footwork and angles, and how essential they are in combat situations. Peppered with humourous quips, Mike gives a decent look into some of the fundamentals of self-defense, specifically those concerning footwork and angles.
Throughout the video, Mike emphasizes the importance of directing an opponent and making them move according to your will, instead of just reacting to their movements. This technique works on the principle of leading an opponent by hiding your intentions and making them move past comfort zones into unexpected traps.
The concept of tricking an opponent by giving them a false sense of winning is intriguing. It taps into the psychology of fighting by making the opponent think they have you right where they want, and then catching them off guard with an unexpected foresight advantage.
Such techniques require dexterity, stance, temporal understanding, as well as a spatial understanding of your surroundings. Mike demonstrates it by getting beaten in footwork and hands, yet making a surprise attack precisely because of this deception.
However, Mike makes it clear that all moves come with risk. Overconfident reliance on a single move can backfire if the opponent anticipates that move. Therefore, it’s necessary to diversify your techniques based on situational analysis.
In a specific technique example, Mike speaks of a ‘Drive-By Punch.’ The punch ultimately relies on timing and precision. It uses advanced footwork, described as a ‘hop’, accompanied by a straight punch from the muscles of the arm. Though it may not hit hard initially, under the right conditions such as a fast-moving match or against a southpaw who’s currently leading the bout, this punch could potentially land the critical hit that could end the match in your favour.
At one point, Mike breaks down the teaching done at Black Mountain Defense in Detroit, Michigan, citing it as an effective method for learning principles and techniques for composed close-range combat. Regardless of whether the student prefers boxing, Muay Thai, or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the fundamental principles of footwork and angles remain universally applicable.
One parting advice Mike delivers, and which deserves emphasis, is ‘hop and bop.’ A ‘hop and bop is essentially a shift in position swiftly followed by a well-aimed strike.’ As trivial as it sounds, the entire premise of advanced footwork and creating angles is succinctly summed up in these three words.
Mike’s presentation isn’t just technical. There’s an undercurrent of teaching the mental aspect of the sport, which is just as crucial. Success in self-defence doesn’t just come from power, but also manipulation, anticipation, and adaptability.
Overall, Icy Mike proves in his video that understanding advanced footwork and angles is not limited to professional fighters—it is indeed an essential part of any self-defence strategy.
To summarise, clever applications of advanced footwork and angles, when seen from the perspective of self-defence can engender significant advantages. As we dissect the sport into the understanding of movements and its corresponding implications, it is evident that mental prowess, anticipation and strategic thinking cannot be overlooked. Combat sports carry lessons that can prepare anybody for self-defence, emphasizing strengths, cunning and mental fortitude over brute force.

love the vlog style intro
Both spirit airlines and detroit. It's a double doozy.
What is the correct way of the posture to be in when kicking and punching
I can't wait to see an old Icy Mike with adult kids that beat him up daily
Mike can u tell me how I can lose weight like what workout I should do?
It would be more fun to watch if you bring in clips of your kids and wife.
I raise out of position with AK, but I don't flop anything. What do I do?
how about this edition, nice
I wanna coach someday, right now I work a minimum wage job and I’m curious what do you guys recommend someone who wants to coach do for work while pursuing such a career. I need a job that pays decent enough to allow me to afford training aswell as a cheap apartment. What is a step up from a minimum wage job that will allow me to do so? I’d say I’m intermediate when it comes to fighting, I know the basics, I could for sure teach a beginner to intermediate class if I was asked to do so. My coaches tell just keep training and eventually you’ll have enough knowledge and experience to coach, which I understand but the other side I wanna know is, what do you do for work? Can someone share some advice?
Honestly Mike saying his daughter doesn’t want to go to Detroit is so sweet.
Hop 'n' Bop! Love it.
So, you want people to lunge into the southpaw power side to land a crappy arm punch? Uh huh… Good stuff.
Yo I saw u on AliExpress u we’re kicking a water melon I want yo show i the pic but u don’t know how
1:38 Thank you for correct use of "careening."
People from Detroit don't like it when you say you went to Detroit but it was actually a suburb outside of Detroit. They get excited when they hear Detroit, and then they get let down when its not. You don't have to care, but I thought I would throw it out there for people who do care.
Hop and bop 🤔
Personally i wouldn't have lower level people use 16oz gloves outside of sparring and bag work. Punching and defending without gloves is a huge difference. Every Bareknuckle boxer that came from MMA has stated this.
please stop giving people southpaw killers
best regards,
a southpaw
Great music choice. RIP.
Romeo must die music
Would the hop and bop work as a southpaw against an Orthodox fighter if you're losing the lead foot position
