Modern Self Defense: Unmasking the Best Pepper Spray for Self-Protection

Icy Mike, the face behind the YouTube channel “Hard2Hurt,” takes us on an intriguing journey in his video titled, “Which Pepper Spray Has The Best Spray Pattern?” In the video, he tests and analyses various pepper sprays available in the market, evaluating their efficiency, utility, and reliability as self-defense tools. His quest for the pepper spray with the best spray pattern stems from a prior disappointing experience with the Mace Triple Action brand, which he found had a weak stream and unsatisfactory effectiveness. In his rigorous tests, Icy Mike used different pepper sprays including Mace Triple Action, Mace Pepperguard Pocket, Sabre Quick Release, Guard Dog Quick Action, and palm sprays with both keychain and pocket clip options. The criteria for his evaluation were the potency, spray distance, and ergonomics of the sprays, as well as the ease-of-use and reliability of their delivery systems. Icy Mike emphasized the importance of ergonomics, noting that you should be able to situate the spray in your hand without having to look at it. He found Mace to have the strongest positive hold, but sourly noted a lack of ergonomic indicators on Palm sprays, seeing it as a potential downside. Moving on to actuators, an essential consideration in choosing a spray is the ease of operation. Flip tops are less prone to accidental activation, making them a safer choice. Sabre offers a flip top version, which is arguably safer and more convenient than other activation methods. While testing the sprays, he hilariously experimented with a spray pump that came equipped with a laser pointer. Predictably, it was deemed a novelty rather than a useful design feature. Several surprising facts emerged from his experiment. He found the Mace Triple Action stream to be disappointingly weak despite its reputation for potency. Guard Dog Quick Action had the most powerful spray but ran out quickly due to the volume of the stream. The Sabre spray had a superior stream, while the Palm spray had a commendable straight stream. In conclusion, his rigorous tests crowned the Sabre Flip Top as the winner. The Sabre Flip Top was found to combine of potency, user-friendly ergonomics, and efficient delivery system. This fascinating in-depth review and comparison serve as a helpful starting point for anyone looking to buy a pepper spray for self-defense. Always remember, having pepper spray is a great first step, but knowing how to effectively use this self-defense tool under stress could make a crucial difference. As the wise Icy Mike often states: in the realm of self-defense, knowledge is key, skill is paramount, and practice makes perfect.

  1. I have a very good female-friend in CA. She sent me a message one day asking if I recommend a knife for self defense and sent me an amazon link to an Mtech knife. She knows I enjoy pocket knives, kitchen knives, hunting knives etc and sharpen them so she thought I would know a self defense one. I instantly told her no, I would not recommend any knife to her at all. I told her she does not want to be in a knife fight – ever – and then got her to look at OC spray.
She listened and got a POM I think.
I am so glad she asked me before doing anything because she really didn't see the issue in carrying a knife for self defense. She thought it would just scare someone away.

  2. When it comes to my personal safety I could care less about what is and what isn't legal for my personal safety. We really have become a sissy nation.

  3. Major problem with pepper spray is, the person being attacked more than likely will panic, spray inaccurately, and probably end up spraying themselves instead. Oh! He or she has pepper spray. I'd better run! I've heard of people putting pepper spray on their tortious.

  4. I'm a former LEO and OC instructor. We carried Sabre Red spray on our belt. It's important to understand that not all pepper spray is created equally. For effectiveness, you want to look at the "heat" measured by the Scoville Heat Units. The higher the better. You also want to pay attention to the stream pattern as well as the material. We carried a fog spray. The plus is your pretty much guaranteed to hit your target. The negative is you have to deal with blowback if outside and contaminating an entire building if inside. You also have foam and gel. Jailers typically carried foam because it wouldn't get into the ventilation system and they also didn't have to deal with blow back. Then there is the deployment tactics. We were trained, and I always used this in my training, the different patterns. The easiest to teach to civilians was the X pattern. Hold the button down and make an X. You will hit your target even if they try to dodge. Good video, but so much more to pepper spray than what you're showing.

  5. Pom is indexable in your pocket. If you orient the pom in your pocket so it naturally points forward when you pull it, and practice (your draw) a little, it will point forward every time. Pocket clip makes it easy to carry and easy to access. For these reasons, I carry pom.

  6. I had to carry pepper spray bc the neighborhood dogs want to rip me off of my motorcycle.

The one time I deployed it

It went right back into my helmet.
It was a very bad experience.

  7. Spray pattern is good to know, but tertiary to aiming and %MC. I went with the red mace. I don’t care for the blue one. It’s marketed with hype, but not as strong as the red which caused lower sales and I’m worried they’re thinking of discontinuing it for that. Most importantly, I can get an indexed grip and intuitively aim with zero trouble unlike POM and many others. Spray pattern doesn’t matter much if you’re 15 degrees off target to start.

  8. POMs design is my absolute favorite because it doesn't look intimidating or threatening. Looks like hand sanitizer. Great especially for women

  9. Google had a few cool results for Pepper spray with striking tool. This thing looked handy AF from Amazon the Fury Tactical Pepper-Strike Pressure Point Device with .50-Ounce Pepper Spray. Then if the spray fails to stop an attack you have something nasty to poke with lol. Anyone who's been poked hard in the chest understands. Seems like these can't be legally used to the face or head because it's too lethal but still pretty good against someone half blind I guess. I think it's better to just spray and run but this gives options to something you're already going to carry ^^

  10. As a woman I speak a humble truth. This host really needs to chill on the flexing efforts. I understand that in his world through his eyes he is proud that his small muscles have developed a bit of definition and that he has been able to make a singular vein emerge from his bone on skin composition. But the people you are trying to impress; Woman; we just see exactly what you were before your proud 'gains' or whatever you call yourself perceived progress. If you are this small then be happy with what you are. Don't try to be something you're not. Every time you grab something, hold something, lift something you are putting more energy into it than you need to and its evident to us. We aren't impressed by it, so just chill. Christ..

  11. I was about to purchase POM, but thanks to this demonstration and pointing out that its almost too sleek in design, I think I will go with the Sabre for EDC then Fox as a back up for the purse and home.

  12. Get yourself a super soaker & mixture of water & Carolina Reaper chilli, lemon and squirt crotch area of intruder he be begging to be castrated.

  13. Funny that Mace was the worst. They are like the Nike of pepper spray. Thanks for the video Mike. I won't be buying Mace brand spray anymore. That spray gun and pepper ball gun look sweet though

  14. POM is the hands down winner. great *er*gonomics. and the bottom half can be spun so it is ready to go whether right hand or left.
with a tiny bit of practice it can be employed in an instant. i carry it every day and have given it to friends and family.

  15. THE SLIDING TRIGGER IS A NO GO AT ANY PRICE! I USED ONE AND IT WENT OFF IN MY POCKET. I did not notice it until my leg burned with intense pain. I had second degree burns the size of my full hand as a result. It took a month for it to heal. The flip top trigger is the ONLY TYPE TO BUY.

  16. Ive used many types of pepper sprays and sprayed many people and the best ive used was Fox Labs Foam. It flys so far and hits so hard and activates pretty quickly.
