Mastering Modern Self Defence: Strategies to Beat Southpaws From The Inside Out

When it comes to the world of boxing, kickboxing, and MMA, facing a southpaw can be quite the challenge. However, understanding and adapting to the southpaw’s tactics can turn the playing field to your advantage. In a recent video titled “Destroy Southpaws from the Inside,” Icy Mike from the YouTube channel Hard2Hurt presents a range of techniques that can equip you with the required strategies to level the odds. Mike emphasises the traditional wisdom of needing to get your foot to the outside when facing a southpaw. However, this is seldom practical in combat, especially when the southpaw has had more practice. Several fighters find themselves overwhelmed when the southpaw attains a dominant position, with their foot to the outside. However, this does not necessarily dictate who controls the fight, contrary to what one might conceive from this prevalent belief. Kick-off Stance and Counterstrategy Mike presents a beginner’s tactic to tackle southpaws. It hinges on the assumption that a southpaw would always aim for a face or body shot once he gets to the outside. This scenario is predictable and can be redirected to your advantage using a pull counter. By luring the southpaw into thinking he has a clear shot at your head, you maneuver his anticipation to set up your pull counter. This beginner strategy can be followed up with an immediate retaliation using your left or right hand. Open Stance Strikes The next strategy is an intermediate one. Hou can use an open stance strike when you are on the inside. It involves timing and exploding forward with a right-hand punch that can catch the southpaw off guard. To ensure you are not countered by a left-hand punch from the southpaw, use non-committal strikes like a simple crescent kick to keep the left hand at bay. Spinning Attacks Another advanced technique Mike proposes is engaging in spinning attacks. These are performed in a sagittal plane for maximum efficiency. This involves spinning hook kicks, elbows and even backfists that come from unexpected angles. However, these need careful twisting and turning to execute. These techniques show that position is not everything when it comes to controlling a fight against a southpaw. With the correct distance and timing, you can still kick and punch effectively from inside your opponent’s stance. A self-aware fighter could use these tactics to neutralize southpaws, even from an inside position. Remember, being on the inside doesn’t mean you’re losing, there’s always room to attack and defend, even against the most experienced southpaws. Their moves can be predictable, and with the right strategy, you can turn their strengths into weaknesses and manage to stay one step ahead. The key is understanding, practice, and timing. And finally, be patient. Changes won’t happen instantaneously, but with consistent practice and effort, your combat performance against southpaws will surely improve. After all, martial arts are as much about the mind as about the body. The right mindset and strategy can make the journey far less daunting. As Icy Mike concludes his video: unless you’re a southpaw, then you’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain. Stay hard2hurt, friends.

  1. This video was mike slowly making me realize hes right. Alot of southpaws are the same. Looks down at my long guard from outside position as I pepper people with outside kicks and straights, maybe i am predictable

  2. Hey Mike. I’ve been loving your channel. I had a topic that I’d like to know your opinion on. Its similar to what you’ve talked about in how to store weapons in your car. What are the worst places to conceal self defense tools/weapons on your person? The one that always comes to my mind are ankle holsters for pistols

  3. Our lizard brains have seen all these tricks – but that exploding right is indeed problem. Also, we're filthy animals, and we like grabbing backs. Careful with that spin😘

  4. That leaping rear hand is a southpaw strat. Hagler used to fuck people up with that one and right handed mutants never see it coming

  5. So, what would be wrong with stepping your right foot out, a jab to pin that left hand, maybe even a control to pull that left hand down, boom comes the right hand, a pivot to put you 90 degrees to you opponents left, in a no mans land position. hooks, uppercuts left body kicks and both leg kicks now available?

  6. You know what kick that yall, u and Seth, love so much, works well from the inside👀👀⁉️ yup that's right, that filthy and forbidden side kick, it can even kinda like a short and stiff hook kicky to kinda stop your opponent moving forward or to work the body

  7. As a southpaw, I can say this. Southpaws can perform the exact same moves on an orthodox fighter. A lot of people seem to forget this fact. Always be first 👊

  8. Im a disgusting creature as you described and I don't know if this translate to KB or MMA as well as boxing, but the diamond step jab always worked for me when outside step is taken.

  9. Another great way to keep south paws from being too quick to counter with that left on the inside is toe kicks to the mid section. Or if you're feeling especially sadistic, to the outer thigh of their rear leg. South paw rear legs are generally much less conditioned than even an orthodox rear leg is to leg kicks.

  10. OMG the tilt your head thing 😂 i do that alot 💀 I'm orthodox but sometimes, i switch to southpaw, because at my level, people usually don't train from both sides, so southpaw gives hell lot of advantage to me and i do this tilt head alot 💀 works 98% times

  11. Pssssst….Southpaw insider secret from a south paw- destroy a South paw from the inside by half-switching/pendulum kicking the inside of their rear leg.
You risk running into that right hand but if you commit and walk through, can spin for a sweep, or force them to move into a spinning heel/backfist or all kinds of weird close range nonsense that might make them think twice about trying to achieve that position.

    Works both ways

  12. As a SouthPaw. My greatest advantage were. Listening to my Boxing Trainer. Listening to my Sensei when I took various different types of Martial Arts. Learning how to fight both right handed and left handed and that took me a long time. Learning in boxing how to throw and offensive jab and a defensive jab. Learning my foot work. The list goes on and on and on. The reason is that it does not matter if you are a righty or a lefty. As long as you are trained to understand the situation you are in… You will be fine.

What you have shown was shown by the old timers in boxing. Something that is not well taught anymore. So thanks for showing people on this.

  13. I have this sparring partner that keeps getting me with liver punches/almost illegal kidney shots. He is a south paw and he keeps kind of going around my guard and hitting my ribs on the right. The problem is this kid is a heavy weight and keeps fucking my ribs up. He has injured me twice now. Is that punch even legal in boxing? It happens when I try to pressure him. Should I just stay outside and change my game plan?
