Modern Self-Defence: Bringing Traditional Martial Arts Techniques to MMA

Having watched Jeff Chan’s new entry from his YouTube channel MMAShredded, we’re going to unravel the fascinating modern self-defence technique showcased. As seen in the short, incisive 49-second video titled “Would you use this Technique in a Real Fight?”, Jeff Chan, an accomplished MMA fighter, breaks down a distinctive self-defence technique taught to him by Kevin Lee (@KevinLeeVlog).

Decoding the Technique This technique interestingly happens to be a variation of a traditional Shaolin Kung Fu technique and is a fine instance of old meeting new. It’s a testament to Lee’s creativity, having made up this BADASS technique that’s been effectively landing blows in fights. The technique evidently resonates with Jeff, who finds it compelling as a marvel of martial art ingenuity. But the question he presents to us is whether we would use it in a real fight.

While the video does not have a transcript, we can surmise from the execution that the technique aims to catch the opponent off-guard. The movement is swift and decisive, requiring focus and a high degree of body coordination.

Cross-Pollination of Styles Jeff’s training under Shi Fu Gregg from @AuthenticShaolin has presumably given him an advantage in picking up this novel move. It beautifully emphasizes the cross-pollination of styles, blending the traditional with the modern to bring about a unique method. Shi Fu Gregg’s influence shines through in the execution of the technique, opening up a conversation on how martial arts can adapt and evolve while maintaining their roots.

Would You Use It? The crucial question Jeff poses is one of functionality – would this technique be viable in real-life combat and self-defence situations, with all its unpredictability and chaos? Now, the answer to that largely depends on how comfortable and competent one can get with it. Martial arts are about understanding and mastering one’s body movements and knowing when to apply what. If one can tune into the rhythm of this technique and synergize it into their skill set, it could potentially be a game-changer.

Towards a Modern Martial Arts Philosophy The mingling of traditional Kung Fu with MMA showcased here effuses a broader philosophy. It presents an evolving understanding of martial arts as not secluded styles rigid with their techniques but as adaptable disciplines borrowing from and enriching each other. The modern self-defence scene is seen endorsing this approach, opening up more options for fighters and highlighting the importance of staying adaptable and innovative.

In sum, the key to effective self-defence in modern times is versatility, quick-thinking, and being open to new methods while mindful of the strengths of traditional techniques. Jeff’s unique Kung Fu adapted move propels this conversation forward. As the rapidly growing community of MMA enthusiasts, fighters, and trainers continue to learn from each other, we look forward to seeing more innovations like these and their practical applications in real-time combat and self-defence. Remember to experiment, adapt, and keep pushing the boundaries of what you think is possible in martial arts.
