Modern Self Defence: When Technique Outweighs Power
Although it might be the age-old question in combat sports, the answer remains compelling time and again — does size matter? Based on a recent video from Jeff Chan’s channel MMAShredded, it’s evident that in today’s world of self-defence, the answer is no. More than that, it’s proof that technique trumps sheer power, confirming an elemental maxim of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Jeff, who runs MMAShredded, demonstrated this clearly by bagging the USDC belt using BJJ against a formidable, heavier, and stronger 240 LBS opponent. The encounter, barely 23 seconds long portrays an overwhelming visual narrative, thereby garnering over a million views (1,410,925 to be exact) since its upload on 24 May 2023. The highlight of this video isn’t the victory itself, but specifically how the victory occurred. Technique versus Strength: The Ultimate Showdown The opponent, a towering 240 lb mammoth, would be perceived as a significant challenge for any martial artist due to his overwhelming size and strength. However, instead of succumbing to the apparent disparity, Jeff, leveraging his BJJ prowess, forged a pathway to victory which underscores that technique and agility can overcome raw power. Jeff’s win over his opponent illuminously framed how BJJ’s approach to self-defence enables smaller, lighter practitioners to triumph over larger opponents. BJJ is designed such that it leverages technique and agility, including chokeholds and joint-locks, to subdue forceful assaults, regardless of the attackers’ size or strength. Taking BJJ into the Modern Self Defence Arena What does this mean for modern self-defence? This win strongly emphasizes the critical role BJJ plays in the self-defence world. In essence, becoming skilled in BJJ is a valuable piece of anyone’s self-defence capability. Today, it’s not about out-muscling your opponent or knocking them out with powerful blows — it’s about quickly neutralizing threats using the right technique, and this is precisely what BJJ allows you to do. The Ultimate Metaphor: YouTube Victory The ‘When Technique Trumps Size! (BJJ for Self Defence)’ video serves as an ideal mirror to the real-world self-defence situations. Contrasting with a conventional, average person’s encounter, this martial art film reveals the importance of mastering techniques associated with the discipline, even in the face of seemingly stronger, larger opponents. It does, after all, bear a striking resemblance to real life — where adversity is often a function of power, not size. At the end of the day, the video by MMAShredded does more than just dramatize a show of force. It sends a potent message to all who practice BJJ — or indeed any martial art — reinforcing that technique, discipline, courage, and perseverance will always dominate mere size and strength. And in this era of modern self-defence, these traits have never been more important.MMA Block

I was able to win the USDC belt using BJJ against a much stronger and heavier 240 LBS opponent!

When there's no eye gouging, throat strikes , balls etc jiu jitsu is great. What's the point of reanacting a apparently real life situation…yet there's rules to it. Pointless excercise.
Lol this is exactly what i do to my 14 year old little brother but then without mats . I let him put me in a crucifix sometimes too and try to escape . Sometimes unsuccesfull
If I grab that dude he aint moving..big guy is weak.
Imagine if they did mma fights in different places like this with couches and props instead of the boring flat octagon
That’s how I got my last promotion
Sick to see it in action in a more realistic situation like this, very interesting
If the attacker started with a knee this would have been over instantly.
Bradley Martin needs to see this
Technique rarely looses
Without all that padding the bigger guy would have won
"BJJ is better" The demostration:
Me and my brothers would train EXACTLY like this all the time, everyday… without pads! 😂
I like the new octagon.
Can technique Trump all that size without all that gear? Protecting the smaller person's chin.
They are dressed like hockey players
Interesting 🤔
Reminds me of locker boxing in hockey. We'd put our helmets and gloves on and fight
Why do y'all have that stupid armor on?? Who tf spars with a hockey helmet 😂😂
How is anyone supposed to knock you out wearing a helmet that can withstand a hockey puck. BJJ is the only logical thing to do here
precise
Ya cuz you’re gunna be wearing full gear when those haymakers come in, works great.
Damn that’s cool
i have questions
What a beast ossss
Was there a massive size difference?
One guy looks slightly bigger but it's not like 5'10" 180 guy vs 6'6" 300lbs giant
When you want to be the man in the casting couch episode
Here to say hi to all the street boxer that claim that bjj cant beat them
Full video plz
Right on time I have a meeting with my parole officer😈
Fake, in a self defense situation you have to announce "ill break the sumbitch" when finishing the armbar
Don’t forget to add that you were up against a sumo wrestler. Not a martial artist
Beautiful Execution of Techniques!!❤
So you gonna run around with those helmets in a street fight? 😅😅😂
what if he was 260 though XD
double tap would’ve made it easier but an arm bar is more more satisfying
lets put on all the protective gear we can and see who can be extra competative cuz this is not a fight. useless
Great drive with that undertook to get out from underneath. Beautiful arm bar as well!
