Modern Self Defence: When Technique Outweighs Power

Although it might be the age-old question in combat sports, the answer remains compelling time and again — does size matter? Based on a recent video from Jeff Chan’s channel MMAShredded, it’s evident that in today’s world of self-defence, the answer is no. More than that, it’s proof that technique trumps sheer power, confirming an elemental maxim of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Jeff, who runs MMAShredded, demonstrated this clearly by bagging the USDC belt using BJJ against a formidable, heavier, and stronger 240 LBS opponent. The encounter, barely 23 seconds long portrays an overwhelming visual narrative, thereby garnering over a million views (1,410,925 to be exact) since its upload on 24 May 2023. The highlight of this video isn’t the victory itself, but specifically how the victory occurred. Technique versus Strength: The Ultimate Showdown The opponent, a towering 240 lb mammoth, would be perceived as a significant challenge for any martial artist due to his overwhelming size and strength. However, instead of succumbing to the apparent disparity, Jeff, leveraging his BJJ prowess, forged a pathway to victory which underscores that technique and agility can overcome raw power. Jeff’s win over his opponent illuminously framed how BJJ’s approach to self-defence enables smaller, lighter practitioners to triumph over larger opponents. BJJ is designed such that it leverages technique and agility, including chokeholds and joint-locks, to subdue forceful assaults, regardless of the attackers’ size or strength. Taking BJJ into the Modern Self Defence Arena What does this mean for modern self-defence? This win strongly emphasizes the critical role BJJ plays in the self-defence world. In essence, becoming skilled in BJJ is a valuable piece of anyone’s self-defence capability. Today, it’s not about out-muscling your opponent or knocking them out with powerful blows — it’s about quickly neutralizing threats using the right technique, and this is precisely what BJJ allows you to do. The Ultimate Metaphor: YouTube Victory The ‘When Technique Trumps Size! (BJJ for Self Defence)’ video serves as an ideal mirror to the real-world self-defence situations. Contrasting with a conventional, average person’s encounter, this martial art film reveals the importance of mastering techniques associated with the discipline, even in the face of seemingly stronger, larger opponents. It does, after all, bear a striking resemblance to real life — where adversity is often a function of power, not size. At the end of the day, the video by MMAShredded does more than just dramatize a show of force. It sends a potent message to all who practice BJJ — or indeed any martial art — reinforcing that technique, discipline, courage, and perseverance will always dominate mere size and strength. And in this era of modern self-defence, these traits have never been more important.

  1. When there's no eye gouging, throat strikes , balls etc jiu jitsu is great. What's the point of reanacting a apparently real life situation…yet there's rules to it. Pointless excercise.

  2. Lol this is exactly what i do to my 14 year old little brother but then without mats . I let him put me in a crucifix sometimes too and try to escape . Sometimes unsuccesfull

  3. How is anyone supposed to knock you out wearing a helmet that can withstand a hockey puck. BJJ is the only logical thing to do here
