Modern Self Defence: Lessons From Sparring With Egypt’s 3x Karate World Champion
When it comes to self-defence, understanding advanced martial techniques is crucial. But not many can boast of having the chance to train and spar with a three-time Karate world champion. That’s exactly what Jeff Chan of MMAShredded did when he was invited to TKO Martial Arts gym, located in the heart of Egypt. The gym’s head coach and owner, Ahmed – a triple world Karate champ – extended the invitation. After teaching a seminar, Chan enthusiastically participated in a sparring session with everyone in attendance. For those not in the know, ‘sparring’ is a form of training common to many martial arts disciplines. It involves combatants testing each other’s skills using common sequences and strategies aimed at simulating actual combat. One standout technique that Chan employed was the running hip sweep. As practitioners of martial arts could tell you, this move requires great skill and precision, showcasing his prowess in wrestling and judo. Khan also expertly used a foot sweep to knock Ahmed off balance. Even though Ahmed quickly regained his balance and lashed forward with a flurry of punches, Khan cleverly employed MMA techniques to stay in control. As they fought, Chan tried to catch both of Ahmed’s palms so that he could control the arms using a technique called double bicep control. Failures and successes came in quick succession, showing the importance of adaptability in self-defence situations. The sparring was not without its exciting surprises. A flying knee from Khan managed to earn gasps and applause, despite him making clear his intention to avoid making actual contact. There were also high kicks and back kicks that emphatically demonstrated the impressive flexibility and accuracy demanded by the sport. Beyond the techniques, a vital takeaway from this session was the importance of overall fitness and conditioning. As Khan mentioned, not only does he maintain his shape for such training all year round but he also manages to stay fit despite his hectic travel schedule. This is thanks to a no-equipment-needed strength and conditioning program designed for him, focusing on developing a stable core, enhancing cardio endurance and explosive power. In conclusion, this sparring session with Ahmed, Egypt’s 3x karate world champion, highlights the importance of blending different martial arts techniques in a modern self-defence approach. Moreover, it demonstrates the significance of maintaining and improving physical fitness for optimal performance and effective self-defence. Indeed, the world of martial arts is not just about acquiring self-defence skills, but also about exploring one’s capabilities and pushing boundaries. It is about learning to adapt, to respect your opponent, and, above all, to respect the discipline. This video serves as a beautiful testament of these values, all while providing insightful commentary on techniques and their practical applications.MMA Block
