Modern Self-Defence: Leap into Safety with this Advanced Kick Technique
In the rapidly evolving world of self-defence, techniques and tips can change in a heartbeat. But all in all, there seems to be a common thread among effective street defense strategies: efficiency, surprise, and most of all, simplicity. A perfect illustration of this is a recent video released by the YouTube channel MMAShredded, which is run by Jeff Chan. This bite-sized clip offers valuable insight into a common issue encountered by martial artists: what happens when your kick gets caught? With this being a universal problem in real-life encounters, the ‘JUMP if your kick is caught’ technique becomes an invaluable addition to one’s repertoire. Utilizing a clever combination of agility, activity re-direction, and finesse, it might just be your saving grace in a potentially dangerous situation. The raw footage of the video doesn’t contain any dialogue, which allows for a total focus on the physicality of martial arts. More than just being audibly silent, it strongly hammers on the message that the practice of self-defence is far beyond mere words. Fundamental Principle The technique in question sees an opponent trapping your kick – a scenario that renders many fighters vulnerable. The instinctive response might be to retract and regain control, but MMAShredded advises a counterintuitive but high-efficient idea: jump. The physics behind it? Weight transfer and active evasion both combining to catapult you into safety. Execution With a swift and spontaneous upward motion, you can use your opponent’s grip against them. As they seize your kick, catching them off-guard, their balance is temporarily compromised, and this is your ideal chance to spring up. This technique requires essential core strength, quick reaction times, and synchronized foot-eye coordination. Although advanced, it echoes the age-old mantra of martial arts: use your opponent’s strength against them. Application The ‘JUMP if your kick is caught’ strategy isn’t just for MMA athletes. The beauty of this move is its universal adaptability. No matter if you’re a seasoned martial artist or a novice self-defence student, this tactic’s essence lies in its practicality. It’s not about fancy moves, it’s about real-world survival. The unpredictability of the technique makes it particularly useful against opportunistic attackers who might not be expecting such a deft move. Training Like any martial arts technique, practice makes perfect. Incorporating this move into your training regimen will undoubtedly augment your agility and response times, making your footwork more intricate and dynamic. As evident, this defense mechanism focuses significantly on the lower body powerhouse – your legs, a feature often under-estimated in combat situations. In conclusion, MMAShredded’s ‘JUMP if your kick is caught’ serves as an excellent reminder that not all battles are won with brute strength. In the world of self-defence, your mind’s sharpness, your body’s speed, and your ability to turn disadvantages into assets prove to be your most potent weapons. So next time you find yourself in a tight spot, remember to jump – it could be the leap that keeps you safe. Remember, while this technique is about jumping – it’s vital not to jump into dangerous situations unprepared, and it’s always essential to practice with a knowledgeable coach. Who wants to see a more detailed video on how to avoid getting swept and what else we can do when your opponent catches your kick? If there are enough replies, I will start working on a full video tutorial!
So it makes it harder to slowly put you down in sparring… Just be careful if you're not Jeff chan lol
The right technique, at the right time. Nice tips
My kicks are never caught because i dont throw them
he also waited until they lunge forward so it pushes them down at the same time
I'm worried about a body slam 😱
I rarely try to sweep, I catch and punch if possible. They almost always go down. Of course there is the catch, sweep and punch too.
I do this often when my kick gets caught in MMA sparring. Sometimes I jump knee on the body as baxk up.
but against a grappler, dont jump you are just making it easier for them, to slam you against the floor.
Yeah! Jump and limp leg so they can’t finish a single too!
It's funny that i never really thought of that as a counter. But i always start hopping or jumping depending on distance. Only our countering attempts are different. I look for a chance to swim under the arm if they are tight or if i get out it turns into a sidekick or turning sidekick. That's just my preference though. I feel the failed attempts 😅
Thanks for the info
Ok Lerdsila
I like to push than pull ,doing this usually gets my foot out of they're grip
I wanna know how to counter this jump too 😂
Wow. That works most of the time. Figured it’d end up getting you body slammed but that does not appear to be the case!👍💪
One reason thais are good at sweeping? They off-balance you FIRST, then trip…. no one in the video did that
“Might as well jump” – Van Halen
Can anybody tell me wich brand these red shinguards are?

Ayoooo
FYI I tried this without holding my opponent and still got sweeped and landed on my head….
Make sure to hold the dude lol
