Modern Self Defence: The Journey to a BJJ Black Belt
In one of the recent Youtube releases by MMAShredded, Jeff Chan gives us a deep insight into his 12-year martial arts journey, culminating in the grading for his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Black Belt. BJJ, known for its efficient grappling techniques and ground game, is a vital component in the realm of modern self-defense, particularly in MMA. When it comes to self-defense, an integral facet is the transition from being a striker to learning the ground game. As Jeff aptly puts it, he initially trained under Professor Nick Ciglia in 2011, seeking to complement his striking skills with effective grappling techniques. It was apropos in his quest to transition to MMA, which calls for a well-rounded set of skills. The Long Road to Mastery Jeff’s journey wasn’t a walk in the park by any measure. It took him four years of training to earn his first major promotion: the blue belt, in 2015. Following a move to Toronto, he received his purple belt under Professor Lynn in 2017 and later his brown belt upon returning to Ottawa and training again with Nick. Fast forward to 2023, Jeff finds himself in New York, training under Professors Ali and Omar at Glory Martial Arts. This rigorous training and belt grading is a testament to the grueling nature of mastering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His past experience with the BJJ brown belt grading was so intense; Jeff describes it as the first time he ever puked during training. This sets up the stakes for his black belt grading: a mentally and physically draining event that demands the utmost preparation. Preparation and Techniques His preparation includes light breakfasts of fruits and vegetables, a hand massager for promoting blood flow, and a massage chair for full-body relaxation, along with leg compressors ritualistically used before his grading. Featuring high-intensity endurance routines such as ‘King of the Hill’ for 90 minutes straight, the grading pushes athletes to their physical limits. Alternatively, the grading process’s fascinating aspect is its unwritten rules: ‘If you’ve been invited to the grading, it has already been decided that you will be promoted; all you have to do is not give up, no matter how tired you are.’ These harshly stringent prerequisites establish the training’s intensity, further cementing the revered nature of the Black Belt status. The Impact Beyond the Mat However, his journey reveals another truth: martial arts training transcends the confines of the dojo or the body’s physical limits. It manifests itself into various life aspects, offering numerous unexpected but profoundly necessary benefits. Martial arts training affords individuals self-discipline, confidence, and humility, similar to Jeff’s experience. With time, it extends into lifelong friendships, eventual careering prospects, fuelling unyielding resilience during bleak phases, and potentially finding soulmates. As Jeff inspires many with his tenacity and dedication, his story also serves to motivate aspirants that the road to mastery can be arduous, filled with trials and tribulations. However, the key remains constant: never quit, and strive to be the best version of yourself, inspiring others along the journey. Thus, the understanding of this taxing, transformative confluence of hard work, dedication, and growth is crucial, offering a holistic view of one’s journey towards martial arts mastery and emphasizing its integral role in modern self-defense.MMA Block
