“The #1 Kata Bunkai Exercise for Self-Defense” by Jesse Enkamp
Released on January 27, 2018, “The #1 Kata Bunkai Exercise for Self-Defense” is a video tutorial by Jesse Enkamp, the ‘Karate Nerd’, that has been viewed around 100590 times. Enkamp is joined by his brother, Oliver, a professional UFC fighter, in delivering this 5-minute and 47-second video on understanding the use of kata techniques in practical self-defense.
Enkamp introduces an exercise called Kata Connection which is a bridge between the solo form (Kata) and its practical application (Bukai). The exercise is simple and engaging, likened to a game. It starts with standing in a natural, relaxed stance, not ready for combat. The purpose is to react instinctively against an unexpected attack mimicking real-life self-defense situations.
As the video unfolds, Oliver simulates different kinds of attacks on Jesse, who instinctively reacts using marketed karate techniques. Enkamp explains the logic behind each move, resulting in kneeing the opponent in the groin or throwing them. He then guides viewers through recreating the same technique solo and connecting the moves to a known Kata.
Jesse Enkamp emphasizes the importance of understanding the connection between self-defense and Kata, advocating for a revival of the lost interpretations of Kata. He concludes the tutorial encouraging watchers to train hard and have fun. The video serves as a practical guide to understand Kata beyond choreographed movements, making it a popular choice for karate enthusiasts who wish to deepen their knowledge and skills.

The Practicality of Karate in MMA and Fighting Sports
The application of Karate in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and other fighting sports is often underappreciated. Its principles, although rooted in self-defence, offer strategic advantages that enhance a fighter’s repertoire. For instance, the swift, explosive movements and emphasis on precision within Karate translate well into effective striking in the ring.
However, the sports industry often views Karate as being less practical due to its perceived lack of ground-game and grappling techniques. But, it’s not unheard of for fighters to integrate Karate with other styles to create a unique, well-rounded fighting style.

The Emergence of Practical Japanese Martial Arts
The history of practical Japanese martial arts, known as “Bujutsu,” is deeply rooted in the country’s feudal era. Initially used for warfare, these techniques evolved over centuries, adapted by Samurai for practical use. Styles like Jujutsu, Kenjutsu, and Kyudo reflect this evolution, demonstrating practical self-defense skills while adhering to spiritual and philosophical principles.

Solo is a word in englisch?
In reality, though, nobody grabs your hand before they punch you. That only happens in the classroom.
You should do a video with some Judo guys. As a wrestler, Isshyn-Ryu and karate hobbyist, and former weekend warrior in the mma gym, I’d love to see it. I greatly enjoy your videos because I was always tickled when karate was applied well.
You must do semple oya yubi..and follow…makikomi
This is very creative and useful.
El bunkai numero 5 se parece a seyunchin en goju ryu the number five get similitud of seyunchin in goju ryu
I came here with the question "which kata is best for self-defense?". I got an even better answer.
Hikite looks like a very common technique to catch round kicks before applying various types of counters that we usually saw on other fighting styles like muay thai, kickboxing, etc.
that is one of the reason why I prefer bunkai over kata. bunkai really help people to see where the kata came from and improve the kata from there
This video is so great! I can’t stop to think there is so much karate schools that teach kata, but not bunkai and self defence.. so people search for Krav Maga or other commercial stuff, and they don’t know that karate is so complete
wax on, wax off

I don't know if it's lost knowledge l do know not enough bunkai is being past on by teacher's I have had to look everywhere to try and get the knowledge l want and I've found that some things in a kata are the same in other katas just look a little different but give same results.
Thank you for bringing Kata into real life situations!! My son and I practice Isshin Ryu Karate
Excellent video sensei Jesse, really well explained and demonstrated👏👌👍
weak
The open handed part at the start, looks like a move in Nipaipo kata
old but gold
I had someone grab my wrist in order to punch me and from kata my muscle memory move was a elbow to the solar plexus from Uechi ryu seisan.
To develop muscle memory Master Philip Porter found that you had to either do the movement, see the movement and/or think the movement through. When this got to 5,000 his students developed muscle memory.
👍👏
Oss!!!
lol
That's the point! Thank you for this video Jesse and Oliver! Osuuuu!
