Modern Self-Defence: Insights Gained from an Encounter with a Bellator Fighter
The practice of martial arts is a multi-faceted discipline that caters to physical health, self-discipline, and most relevantly, self-defence. In a recent update from the YouTube channel MMAShredded, Jeff Chan, the channel’s creator, explores an intriguing perspective on self-defence, borne from his personal experience of clashing against a professional Bellator Fighter. The first lesson, in Chan’s own words, is to understand the value of head movement. Often discounted as an impractical manoeuvre in a real-world encounter, head movement plays a crucial part in dodging blows and cultivating an effective, unpredictable defensive style. Pivoting out of harm’s way while also positioning yourself for a counterattack ensures an upper hand in a critical situation. Secondly, Chan stresses the importance of knowing your reach. To maximise the effectiveness of your strikes, understanding the extent of your limb’s reach is fundamental. As observed in the video, the Bellator fighter’s knowledge of his reach enabled him to maintain a safe distance while successfully landing damaging blows. Another point Chan makes is the emphasis on efficient energy usage. In martial arts and indeed any physical encounter, the efficient use of energy can be the decisive factor between winning or losing. This is observed during Chan’s match with the Bellator Fighter, where despite the intensity and consistent pressure, they meticulously managed their energy output to remain effective till the end. Chan also highlights the use of unpredictable, varied attacks. Mixing up your offence with a diverse array of techniques keeps your adversary off-balance, making it difficult for them to anticipate and effectively counter your attacks. Lastly, but by no means least, is the significance of learning from every experience. Chan’s session with the Bellator Fighter, though challenging, served as a pertinent learning experience. Regardless of the outcome, each interaction, every encounter, and indeed, every deflection, parry, and jab, present learning opportunities. Recognizing these instances and deriving valuable insights from them contributes to progressive development as a martial artist. While a widely viewed video, it’s important to remember that the purpose isn’t just about showcasing an encounter with a Bellator Fighter; it also serves as a reminder to all martial arts practitioners about the pivotal aspects of self-defence—such as effective head movements, knowing your reach, efficient energy usage, unpredictability in offence, and an eagerness to learn from each experience. Despite the complex tapestry of martial arts learning, key takeaways from Jeff Chan’s intense sparring session shine a light on the realistic, practical attributes of modern self-defence. Chan’s endeavor is a testament to continuous learning and improvisation. Through this understanding, everyone from novice to professional fighters can adapt these techniques into their own practice, paving the way for a more comprehensive approach to modern self-defence. Modern self-defence isn’t just about throwing powerful punches or landing perfect kicks—it’s the science of understanding your body, utilizing your energy, foreseeing your opponent’s moves, and being adaptable in the face of danger. As we continue to learn and evolve, the landscape of modern self-defence will only become more empowering and efficient.MMA Block

I pulled out this footage from 2 years ago at Gracie barra Ottawa that I never got to edit. Sometimes I can get buried with footage and thats why it can take so long for me to edit and release some videos!
Great video ,but i need your break down of the exchanges bro.
Great content and the addition of slow mo was an excellent idea! Thank you Jeff, osss!
I love the slow mo
Great contact sparring, great sportsmanship. Two fighters competing to outclass each other by being classy.
Those gloves he had on were SICK
you actually did good
Im really impressed by the foot movement of Yusef here. It reminds me allot of "Savat" (did I spell that right?)
i like the old style videos, the weird slow mo makes you guys look like normal people
impressive how he always has his chin tucked
Just chiming in to say I would prefer more commentary. As someone who's still relatively new to Muay Thai it helps me catch some of the nuances I might otherwise miss.
Incredible stuff. Held your own well.
Yuh, those slow downs are dope indeed. A little breakdown before or something is dope too, but doesn't have to be on each and every exchange.. just slowing them down to showcase it works. I mean it feels good to watch for me at least. : )
I would love to see a video with you and Michael Jai White
Vid is sick when playing some Tekken 7 or Tren Twins music
Steel sharpens steel. Aloha
I like the slowed down strikes, easier for me to see what is happening without having to stop and rewind frequently.
I don't like the slow mo too much. Especially here you talk about how fast he is but it's always in slow mo so it's hard to see his speed
damn just googled yusef and he fights in like a week on the ninth. Cant wait to see him . He also won a heel hook victory in his outing. Damn!
Wouldn't say outclassed but he kept you at his range almost the whole session
I love the commentary and I really like the slo-mo!! Great content as always!!!
yusuf's style kind of reminds me of anderson silva sometimes
Your still a mf beast!!!!
Waaaaaay too much slow motion
Fluid motions = speed
your videos always get my hyped for my own sparring sessions at the gym haha great content man!
what shin guards do you prefer for training?
First time I’ve seen someone playing the same game as you good spar👌
He is incredibly fast for a welterweight
bro im sorry but ur so bad at striking. u need to go to a boxing gym and sharpen up your fundamentals in striking
New editing style looks sick!
Great job with the slo mo!
One thing I noticed immediately, is that there is abit of a height difference between you two (or maybe you are the same and it's just the angle), but regardless he really knows how to abuse it with teeps and jabs. And honestly, a fighter who knows how to use their reach advantage, if they got good flexibility and good technique, than top it off with good cardio, you are in for a nightmare fight.
1:44 well shii I ate that too lmao
Definitely prefet the narrated style.
i LOVE the slo mo
There are many things that set professional fighters a league above, but the one thing that stands out is the efficiency and precision of movement.
It takes so much skill and confidence in your own ability to only make necessary moves and to stay protected with just enough movement, but not too much.
Incredible job though. The fact that you can even hang as much as you did is insane.
In your defense he's using his length as his main advantage for most of this. He does it really well though. With lengthy skilled fighters like this you really need to take the unpredictable level up some notches. Ok, that's the extent of my keyboard warrior bs…
I feel like I didn't see a lot of feinting.
Jeff such a knobhead
Please don't stop commenting. Often we miss minor details when just watching, even if it's slowed down.
You pausing and highlighting things gives us your perspective as well as gives us the time to absorb it.
He really good and a gentleman he did not try to hurt you he just would touch you with the gloves
The commenting is great and the slow mo is awesome too
Honestly, I prefer the slow-mo editing style, easier to study your sparring and learn from them!
Beware of Jihadi 👾
yah i too prefer this kind of video with the slow mo. its like watching a good anime fight.
Nice editing man
I didn't know that you were a bantam weight. I figured you were a featherweight. You are a pretty big BW.
I prefer full speed videos 👍
