Mastering Modern Self Defence: Encountering Duel Wielding Melee Weapons

The world of self defence is expanding constantly. Just when you think you have grasped the range of safety measures, a scenario implodes on you, such as confronting a mentally ill person dual wielding melee weapons. Hard2Hurt’s Icy Mike presents a compelling video discussing, of all things, defending yourself against this rare, unpredictable event, and today we are going to break it down for you. In the video, Icy Mike is responding to a viewer’s heartfelt plea. The viewer details a terrifying real-life event where a coworker, in a drug-fueled rage, attacked another with metal pipe and box cutter in each hand. Those present were powerless due to the fear of causing personal harm. So how do we tackle this scenario with minimal casualties? Icy Mike reminisces about a similar situation where he had to approach a mentally disturbed teenager wielding a metal spatula and a spoon. While those might not come off as menacing, Mike guarantees you wouldnโ€™t want to be hit with them. Nevertheless, the attack principle remains intact, irregardless of the weapon in question. The trick is to neutralize an attacker without the benefit of a firearm, all the while anticipating the unpredictability of a mentally disturbed assailant. Creating Space with Defensive Tools One might instinctively reach out for pepper spray or a baton; however, it goes without saying that these may not be an effective strategy if you’re in a confined space like a locker room or a bedroom of a trailer. The pepper spray will affect you too and going melee to melee with a baton could put you at a disadvantage. Instead, Icy Mike wants you to consider some unconventional objects to aid in your self-defence. The Quick Transition Between Furniture and Grappling If you find yourself in a similar situation, Mike suggests looking around for sturdier objects, which could be anything from a chair to a headboard. The idea is not to use the furniture WWE style, instead, use it as a shield between you and the attacker. Keep your adversary focused on the object, allowing you to improve your position and get behind their back, nullifying their weapons advantage. Once you have control, remember to keep one eye on the battlefield for obstacles. A misplaced foot on a Lego brick can hamper your ability just as a surprise attack might do. Allowing the potential attacker to focus on the piece of furniture gives you the element of surprise, enabling you to assess your own stance and close or extend your battlefront as needed. The Art of Distracting the Assailant Your objective here is simple – keep the attacker busy with the furniture while you change your tactic. As soon as they start dealing with the item you thrust into their face, let it go. This quick change in strategy can disorient your adversary and leave them open to your defensive moves. Final Thoughts The foremost point to remember in self-defence is to stay vigilant and practice situational awareness. You do not want to engage in a fair fight – survival isn’t about fighting fair. You always want to be at an advantage, have an upper hand somehow. It could be your environment, your skill set, or your psychological edge; finding that advantage could mean the difference between life and death. Understanding the principles laid out by Icy Mike, one can only hope, would make a life-saving difference when confronted with such a terrifying situation.

  1. Reminds me of the time when I was a teen at my friend's house and his autistic brother was threatening us with a knife. I grabbed a baking pan as a shield and got the knife out of his hand while my friend called 911

  2. I vote for Eric being in every vid heโ€™s absolutely hilarious in the backgroundโ€ฆget him a raise or train him for free something. Heโ€™s a legend in the making๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ

  3. A soup spoon and a spatula are obviously not lethal weapons, and you could go straight at him with little to no training. I've seen literally hundreds of defensive videos on how an unarmed person can disarm an attacker with a knife, bat, and even a gun. But I've never seen a video of an unarmed person defending or disarming an opponent with two knives or say eskrima/escrima sticks or fighting blades…

  4. The fun factor of this one was off the charts ๐Ÿ™‚ Educative and useful as always, but man… this guy knew how to entertain us from the background ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Man I've been wondering about the headboard incident ever since you mentioned it in the pistol whipping video, I wasn't expecting it to get immediately overshadowed by spatula-induced lacerations during the very same incident lmao

  6. Speaking on the sweatpants and carry part. Just wear whatever athletic pants/shorts you already have and just put your belt on underneath your pants. Same thing. Same comfort. Didnโ€™t have to buy special pants.

  7. So glad you addressed improvised weapons (ie furniture and kitchen utensils), they're so underrated. People tend to forget that less-than-lethal options can still injure and hurt like crap. Y'all never banged your foot against a door or your leg against furniture before?

  8. The education and entertainment are on point. Started off serious, did not expect to hear "he was posed up like a ninja turtle" or "I'm not a monster I'm not gonna suplex him on a lego" but still learned something in the end LMAO
I feel bad for the rookie, "Dude who got whacked with a spatula" must've been his reputation for WEEKS
